Miami Heat gives charity award to junior

Raquel Coronell '17 received a standing ovation during a break in play in the second quarter of the April 10 Miami Heat game against Orlando when the Heat honored her with the State Farm "Exist to Assist" award  for her "Bald is Beautiful" project. You can read her story in the Miami Herald here[More]

Dade school board honors AP Gov class

The Miami-Dade School Board has invited Greg Cooper's AP U.S. Government classes to a May 11 school-board meeting to be recognized for the classes' voter-guide website. The 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. board meeting will be broadcast on WLRN.

WSVN-7 highlights student non-profit

Ten years after Joshua Williams '18 founded the non-profit Joshua's Heart, WSVN Channel 7 featured the charity and Williams on its newscast on April 9. The station also included a story on Williams' efforts, which have raised more than half a million dollars. You can view both here.  

RE physics team takes first at Barry U

RE's physics team – Andres Arango '16, Alex Fuster '16, Lance Helguero-Kelley '16, John Mistele '17, John Muniz-Aleman '16 and Guillermo Wenrich '17 – topped 13 area high schools at the 15th Annual Chemistry and Physics Tournament at Barry University April 8. [More]
 

THE ARTS

Zou seeks national win – and U.S. stamp

Megan Zou '18's oil painting of a swan could land on the front of a U.S. stamp if she prevails in a national contest at the end of this month. Zou's Tundra Swan won "Best of Show" honors in the Florida Junior Duck Stamp Contest March 29, advancing her into a competition with top young artists from the other 49 states. [More]

MS student band gets Heat playoff invite

Adam Chopp '22 and Levi Gans '22 have been invited to play the Star Spangled Banner at a Heat playoff game with their kid-band Arrowhead after successfully performing at American Airlines Arena on mascot Burnie's birthday March 6. [More]

RE Combo leads stellar effort at states 

The RE Combo claimed the highest honors – a "Superior with Distinction" rating – as 17 RE students combined to earn a total of 17 Superior medals at the Florida Bandmasters Association State Solo and Ensemble/Jazz Festival in Cape Coral, Fla., March 28-29.  [More]

Frosh's work premieres at film festival

The John D. MacArthur Beach State Park selected Jorge Zreik '18's film – "Miami's Mangroves: The Last Frontier" – to premiere at its 2nd Youth Making Ripples Film Festival  on April 2. The film was selected because it inspires and educates students about changes that can be made to conserve the state's waterways. [More]

SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Both tennis teams win regional titles

The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams brought home a pair of trophies from Key Biscayne on April 7, with both claiming Region 8-1A championships at the Crandon Park Tennis Center and advancing to the state tournament. Each competes in Orlando on April 13.
 

Girls' water polo wins district; boys 2nd

Sofia Carrera-Justiz ’16 scored four goals to lead the girls’ water polo team to the District 15 title with a 10-2 victory over Coral Gables High on April 5. The boys dominated Columbus High in the district semifinals but fell just short in the district final to last year’s state champion Belen Jesuit. [More]

Girls’ lacrosse claims district title

Captain Bridget Turner ’16 scored six goals and Erin Bakes ’18 contributed five to help the girls’ lacrosse team capture its second-straight District 31 title with an 18-3 victory over Miami Palmetto Senior High at Ransom Everglades on April 6.

Rock 4 Relief honors late RE parents

RE musicians honored beloved parents Kevin Smith and Richard Cochran with a Rock 4 Relief concert that showcased their talents and compassion. The April 8 event drew 300 people and raised about $1700 for Habitat for Humanity and the Kevin Smith Memorial Fund.

Parents get advice on athletic recruiting

The 21st-century athletic recruiting process requires that student-athletes and their parents learn the "art of self-recruiting," two experts on college recruiting told Ransom Everglades parents during a presentation in the Lewis Family Auditorium April 10.

Four alums talk (virtually) to RE students

RE alums on four college campuses fielded questions from current students, offered advice and encouragement, and reminisced about their high-school days during an engaging virtual chat at the Lewis Family Auditorium April 5. [More]

Alum '09 talks about global health equity

Katie Kralievits '09 urged RE students to do something about the disparity in healthcare that exists around the world, investing their efforts in substantive programs rather than short-term relief efforts that often have little impact. [More]

Bradley Rose '01 into UM Hall of Fame

Former tennis star Megan Bradley Rose '01 entered the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame on March 31 with eight other inductees, including former NFL stars Kellen Winslow, Jr., and Willis McGahee. Read the Miami Herald story here. [More]

Watson '87 hosts late-night show on PBS

Carlos Watson '87 launched his late-night talk show career on PBS at 11 p.m. April 5 with the first episode of Point Taken, a show designed to bring together experts for cordial debate on interesting issues. Watson, a former political analyst for CNN, hosts. Watch the debut here.

Ransom Everglades offers two terrific programs – Summer Explorations and Summer Camp – that can be done separately or together. An academic-themed Summer Explorations camp offers exciting courses in robotics, aviation, film production and others for rising 6th through 12th graders. A summer camp offers sailing, canoeing, soccer, basketball and other sports and activities for kids 4-12. Kids can choose one or both.
