I watched 22 RE juniors face a large crowd with effortless and enviable confidence last week. These peer-to-peer counselors, mentors to our freshmen, handled prickly topics related to health education with ice-water-in-their-veins composure. As I listened, one thought kept coming to mind: These juniors, all involved in our one-year-old Health Information Project (HIP) program, are the very definition of empowered students. [ More]

'Defamation' to spur honest discussion
Upper School students and faculty will take a pause from the academic day on Jan. 30 to assemble in the Lewis Family Auditorium to watch — and participate in — a presentation of "Defamation – The Play." The play is a courtroom drama — with a twist. The student audience is the jury. The characters and contours of the case are designed to confront stereotypes and catalyze discussions of race, religion, class and the law. [ More]

See what RE students did last summer
Last summer, Ransom Everglades students assisted with spinal cord research, learned and applied computer code, created art for a gallery, worked for the Department of Homeland Security, interned with a U.S. Congresswoman, served as teachers. Records tumble for RE's math team
Four Ransom Everglades teams earned top-five finishes at the same regional math event for the first time in school history as the entire RE squad of 35 mathematicians combined for fifth-place overall on Jan. 21. The performance came at the Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta event at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. [ More]

Academic team preps for TV show
RE's academic team prepared for its televised opening match of School Duel 2017 with a resounding victory at the South Florida Winter History Bee and Bowl at the Ransom Campus Jan. 14, sweeping the top three individual places and winning the top-team award. The academic team will face Florida Christian at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 on BECON-TV. [ More]

Debate scores nationally and locally
Two speech and debate students earned a top-16 finish at a national policy debate tournament in Lexington, Mass., another earned a top-10 finish at a Chicago-area event and seven others scored top-five finishes at tournaments throughout South Florida. [ More]

Musicians at all-district, all-state events
Twenty-one Ransom Everglades musicians showcased their talents during an all-district band concert Jan. 21 at the Lewis Family Auditorium just a week after five RE music students performed with the state's most exclusive high schools ensembles during the Florida Music Association conference in Tampa. Girls' soccer gets district three-peat
Four Raiders scored to lead the girls' soccer team to its third straight district title with a 4-1 defeat of Immaculata-La Salle High Jan. 20 at Nathaniel Traz Powell Stadium in Miami. Erin Bakes '18, Catherine Kolski '18, Hunter Matson '18 and Lindsay Gould '21 knocked in goals as RE improved its record to 15-4-2 and earned a home opener in the regional playoffs Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. [ More]

RE's boys' soccer team avenged a regular season loss to Mater Lakes Academy with a 2-1 victory in a district quarterfinal on Jan. 23 at Immaculata-La Salle High, setting up a meeting in the district semifinals with the state's top-ranked team — Miami Edison High — on 5 p.m. Wednesday at La Salle. RE sails to third in home SAISA regatta
Ransom Everglades finished third at the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association regatta on Biscayne Bay Jan. 14 as the school's junior varsity squad earned a first place in the JV division. College deans from five prominent and very different schools – Carnegie Mellon, Yale, the University of California, Bates and The Ohio State University – took to the Lewis Family Auditorium stage on Jan. 12 to share their various approaches to admissions and take questions from an audience of 11th-grade students and parents. Zara Shapiro '21 won her third consecutive school National Geographic Geography Bee on Jan. 12, topping finalist Nikhil Seshardi '21. The deciding question was "Archaeologists have begun excavating an ancient lost city in the region called La Mosquitia in which country north of Nicaragua? (The correct answer is “Honduras.”) [ More]

More than 125 New York area alumni spanning five decades gathered at The Yale Club Jan. 17 to reconnect and catch up on news. Alums from the Class of 1975 to the Class of '13 heard from Head of School Penny Townsend and Board Chair Rudy Prio Touzet '76, who offered updates on the school's plans for a new STEM building and the recently acquired La Brisa property.
